The client does require this person to either have 6-12 months of automation experience, or a strong working knowledge of scripting (Perl, python, ruby, etc). As you know, once someone becomes a proficient automated tester, they become more marketable and can earn much higher rates. The client will do an initial phone screen to assess communication skills as they are very important.
