Position: *Optical Network Engineer***

Location: *Herndon**, VA***

Duration: *4 months *



*Network build:*
- The Optical Engineer will represent the Client optical transport Network
Management Center (NMC) in design, configuration and deployment of NOC tools
and development of detailed NOC.
- The Engineer will work closely with several internal teams in support of;
network acceptance, surveillance, monitoring and alarming as well as break
fix procedures for the proposed national network.

*Business as usual:*
- Provides first-line technical escalations for lower level technicians
supporting the Client optical transport network.
- Coordinate with peer groups, provides higher level surveillance and
Incident Management support for Client.
- Duties include: National optical network.
- Develop all operational requirements related to the optical NMC in support
of the national optical network.
- Represent the optical NMC in meetings to present optical NMC operational
requirements and ensure all requirements are included in the final network
design.
- Work closely with project management team, design teams and vendors to
fully understand the detailed network design and identify all optical NMC
tools required to support the national network.
- Lead the optical NMC team to fully develop surveillance, management, and
optimization and break-fix procedures, including detailed job aids, in
support of the optical network.
- Troubleshoot, test, and maintain the Client optical transport
architecture.
- Execute Client optical transport operations standards to ensure a
consistent quality of support.
- Support resolution of complex issues that involve multiple users or ones
that cannot be resolved by the Division or Tier I Engineers (NOC).
- Facilitate training to ensure all personnel are proficient in every aspect
of all operations processes.
- Assist in the development and documentation of training policies and
procedures.
- Review and approve Statement of Work (SOW) documents to all support groups
for planned maintenances.

*Required Skills:
Qualifications/Minimum Requirements:*
- *Network/NOC experience in a centralized repair/troubleshooting/testing
environment is a must*.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with emphasis on verbal/written
communication including the ability to present performance feedback
effectively and conflict resolution.
- Vendor certifications related to optical transport equipment preferred.
- Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
- Assertive to drive issues as appropriate through to resolution, while
maintaining professionalism in all communications with both internal and
external.
- Solid multi-tasking and detail orientation skills.
- Must have mature judgment and the ability to relate well with others.
- Experience in development of network and element monitoring systems are a
must.
- *Thorough knowledge of layer one and layer two networking required for
this position include SONET, Ethernet, ATM, and especially DWDM technologies
with a strong emphasis on Cisco ONS, Infinera, and Alcatel-Lucent platforms*
.
- Good oral and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills
are essential as well.
- Must be able to manage heavy workloads and high levels of activity and
stress.

This is an *on call position and candidate must be available via cell phone
or pager 24x7 while on call.*
