1. *Java Developer*
*Needed :Scala*
• Fluency in Java or Scala (5 years), or demonstrated mastery of another
language with clear movement towards one of the JVM languages
• Proven experience (2 years) building and maintaining customer-facing APIs
in modern REST frameworks like Akka HTTP, Spray or Play!
• Experience with stream processing, e.g. Kafka, Spark Streaming, Akka,
Flink, etc.
• A strong familiarity with build and dependency management tools like SBT,
Gradle or Maven
• A level of comfort with Unit Testing and Test Driven Development
methodologies
• Familiarity with creating and maintaining containerized application
deployments with a platform like Docker
• A proven ability to build and maintain cloud based infrastructure on a
major cloud provider like AWS or Google Cloud
• Experience data modeling for large scale databases, either relational or
NoSQL
• Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems
Bonus points for:
• Experience working with scientific datasets, or a background in the
application of quantitative science to business problems
• Experience with distributed systems, e.g. Mesos, Kubernetes, Spark,
Hadoop, distributed databases, grid computing
• Bioinformatics experience, especially large scale storage and data mining
of variant data, variant annotation, and genotype to phenotype correlation
• Comfortable speaking publicly on relevant work
• Experience contributing to open source projects
• Knowledge of data science practices, to better steer our efforts to
support them through the infrastructure we create
We encourage you to share with us any and all public contributions you have
made in the form of conference presentations, community forums (e.g. Stack
Overflow, GitHub, etc.), or open source projects and code samples.
Additional Info:
- Leads one of the data engineering team focused around scientific data
sets
- Team is structured as a modern engineering team
- Build full stack data solutions from infrastructure to storage to
deliver to common API
- Don’t do front end application focus
- Build engineered data sources that deal with size and complexity of
scientific data sets that delivers clear services to be worked with.
- Looking for someone that is very comfortable with service layer
development. REST development.
- Expecting them to be JAVA or Scala OR master of another language with
movement to Scala.
- Must be expert level JAVA developer if they do not have any Scala
experience.
- Don’t demonstrate fluency—Must have clear track record on resume that
they have built things in the languages.
- API layers are delivered in Akka HTTP, Spray or Play.
- Extensively built on stream processing-- Kafka, Spark Streaming, Akka,
Flink, etc.
- Generally only finding people with only a little bit of this
experience if they are strong JAVA and Scala.
- Looking for someone that can tell a clear story of individual
contribution to production tech stacks.
- Top 3 skills: Fluent in JAVA/Scala ( or a senior level developer that
can pick up Scala), experience doing modern service level API development,
have experience with some of the principles in deploying applications in a
cloud based environment or similar environment.
- Must be able to work independently and need to be able to
communicate effectively.
- Interview Process: Tim and 3 engineers that are on the team. Local—F2F
interview. But will also do phone screens. Will have engineering
exercises.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent
experience and 3 years of IT Industry experience
• Experienced full-stack developer
• Experience working in a continuous delivery environment
• Experience with test driven development
• Modern web development - HTML5, JavaScript, AngularJS, React
• 2+ years of cloud experience – AWS EC2, IAM, CloudFormation, SQS, SNS,
RDS or equivalent technologies
• Experience creating RESTful microservices
• Functional and object-oriented programming experience
• Experience with relational and non-relational data stores
• Customer engagement including ideation, design thinking, and seeking
rapid feedback
• Take pride in software craftsmanship, diving deep into code and
constantly innovating
