As the UI Designer, you’ll be a vital part of translating the BCBSM brand
into useful and engaging digital experiences for a variety of audiences,
including consumers, members, agents, providers and your colleagues. You’ll
work on a cross-disciplinary team with User Experience, Content Strategy
and Development in a collaborative environment using Agile methodologies.

You’ll create solutions that inform and delight audiences and also achieve
the goals of the business. You’ll determine the layout, color palette,
visual hierarchy and typography, and create the visual affordances (cues)
for interactive components within the interface. You’ll also create and
maintain style guides to ensure a consistent design language is used
throughout each product and advise the team on the appropriate
implementation of BCBSM brand guidelines.


*Essential Duties and Responsibilities :*
1 Create beautiful, clear page layouts and screen designs for our digital
experiences for both desktop and mobile platforms
2 Create and maintain cohesive style guides to ensure a consistent design
language is used throughout each product, and the BCBSM brand is faithfully
and appropriately represented
3 Create intuitive and engaging interface elements such as buttons, icons,
controls and infographics
• Present and defend your design decisions - all your design decisions
should be based on achieving the goals of the user and business as well as
your own design thinking and fundamental principles (i.e. color theory,
visual weight, etc.
• Offer and accept objective, constructive feedback in design critiques
• Be a great team player, with the ability to collaborate closely and
positively with product owners, developers, copywriters and UX designers
• Continually keep yourself and your design team updated with the latest
changes in design standards and methods
Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred
• Three (3) to five (5) years of user interface design experience

*Required Skills : *
• Excel at solving design problems in new and creative ways so our products
don’t become trite or predictable
• Beautiful portfolio of project work for various clients, audiences, and
platforms (showing your process is a plus, including examples of how you
gather and interpret requirements, initial sketches, prototypes and
iterations, as well as final designs)
• Strong understanding and rabid pursuit of fundamental design principles –
you know how to guide the user’s attention where you want, you use words
like “harmony” and “hierarchy” when discussing design, and you know
typography is about more than picking trendy typefaces
• Able to comfortably and successfully pitch your work and negotiate
changes with stakeholders and team members
• We deliver experiences on a wide variety of platforms, so experience
designing for both desktop and mobile (native, responsive/adaptive) is
essential; familiarity with a “mobile first” design approach is very
helpful as well

*Other Helpful Experience and Abilities*
• We’re a human-centered design shop, so familiarity with customer and user
experience best practices will help you craft appropriate solutions and
better communicate with the team
• We work in an Agile environment, so experience working on Agile teams
will help you hit the ground running
• We use pattern libraries as well as style guides, so some familiarity
with front-end development languages will be helpful (HTML5, CSS3,
Javascript) in communicating and planning with the team
• The more you understand about our industry, the more effective your
designs will be for users of our products, so experience working in
healthcare or a related field is helpful
