*Client:* Blackboard

*Duration:* long term contract

*Location:* Reston, VA (must be able to do an onsite interview)



What they are screening on:

·         BGP design and operations experience (most important)

·         Firewall experience (preferably Cisco ASA)

·         DDoS mitigation experience (I’ll sub if they don’t have this
because it is hard to find)

·         OSPF design and operations experience

·         Linux or Unix systems experience

·         Shell scripting

The Senior Network Operations Engineer will be part of the Cloud Services
team that is responsible for providing network operational support to
Blackboard’s infrastructure comprising of 13 datacenters worldwide
supporting millions of end-users. In this role you will be working on
supporting network needs supporting our next generation infrastructure
platform delivering services for Blackboard’s educational products.  An
ideal candidate loves to push the boundaries of existing technologies and
is eager to work on cutting edge solutions deployed at massive scale.

The primary responsibilities of the Senior Network Operations Engineer
include:

   - Maintain, configure, deploy and plan changes for Cloud Services
   network devices across the world including routers and switches (Brocade),
   firewalls (Cisco), and load balancers (Citrix NetScaler), DDoS mitigation
   equipment, and management network devices.
   - Troubleshoot network infrastructure issues and participate in
   multi-discipline “tiger” teams to resolve customer impacting application or
   infrastructure issues.
   - Identify and implement improvements to drive efficiency and meet
   availability objectives.
   - Peer review and support network engineer change plans.  Mentor junior
   staff.
   - Provide capacity planning, performance analysis, develop disaster
   recovery plans, manage configurations of network devices and software.
   - Provide technical expertise, guidance and strategic recommendations to
   develop a roadmap that ensures that the current and planned technical
   solutions are compatible with the company's business needs and strategic
   objectives.
   - Reduce risk of human error by driving automation, enforcing
   configuration standards and contributing to the network design and
   process/procedure documentation set.
   - Support delivery teams in planning and implementing client network
   integration.
   - Review and analyze existing migration processes and provide
   recommendations for improvement


   - Perform maintenance and troubleshooting support which may include off
   hour work.
   - Participate in the Network Operations team’s on-call schedule for
   after-hours and weekend troubleshooting and change implementation support.
   - Identify and/or undertake technical and departmental projects as
   assigned or as necessary

*Required Qualifications *

   - BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
   experience.
   - 5+ years experience operating large scale networks with rigorous
   requirements for availability.
   - Experience and knowledge to independently resolve issues pertaining to
   routing protocols (OSPF/BGP), VLANs (STP/VTP), VPNs (IPSEC), and SSL.
   - 3+ years experience operating and administering load balancers.
   - Understanding of Network Monitoring, including but not limited to SNMP
   and OIDs
   - Experience working with ISPs and interacting with vendors on technical
   cases
   - Highly motivated individual who is a self-starter, eager to learn,
   maintains networking skills and can demonstrate effective project
   management and completion of complex network tasks with little guidance
   - Excellent communication and technical documentation skills; experience
   effectively communicating with technical and non-technical audiences
   - Demonstrate efficient and effective use of problem-solving,
   troubleshooting, project management and task prioritization to solve
   complex network challenges

*Preferred Qualifications:*

   - Hands on experience with Citrix Netscaler Load Balancers
   - Hands on experience with Brocade routers and switches
   - Coding and scripting experience.
   - Have experience with cloud platforms (VMware, AWS, etc) production
   deployments.
   - Have experience automating things at scale.
   - Have a solid understanding of operating systems, especially Linux
   (Ubuntu, RedHat).
   - Ability to draw simple shapes on flat surfaces to illustrate complex
   topics.
   - Teach us something we don’t know.
   - Be driven!
