Hi Everyone,
I trust that this finds you doing well.
Over the last few months, you hopefully have been hearing about SAPAC's efforts in
helping to build a broad coalition of Chicago-based South Asian organizations. The aim
being a stronger collective voice with regard to issues affecting all us, from the
rise of Hindu fundamentalism in India to the civil violations (gross and subtle) in
this country.
SAPAC members have been attending planning meetings in preparation for a November 8th
meeting in Darien (Western suburbs). The purpose of this meeting is to introduce the
idea of a coalition to like-minded individuals and organizations and have a productive
discussion on potential coalition goals and strategies.
Over the next few days, SAPAC members will be sending announcements, agendas etc.
inviting you to take part in this meeting.
I have been going to these planning meetings, which have been "interesting".. After
each meeting, I would realize the incredible importance we (SAPAC) play in this
coalition. We are there to ensure a diversity of voice and opinion.
Time and time again, I hear that "we younger people" don't have a lot to say about
what's happening beyond this country. Often my reaction is to say that there is a lack
of opportunity for us to participate in such endeavors - invitations are rarely
extended to us. Well, an invitation has been extended and SAPAC has taken a lead in
building this coalition.
NOW, we need you to show up!
While there is something to be said about passive-nature of the SAPAC list-serve,
there is also a reason why this group continues to thrive (14 people at the last
meeting!). This group has not been as active as it is right now, and if we are going
to sustain this momentum and not burn out, we need to make connections and spread the
workload (much is to be done!).
I know it's on a Saturday AND it's in the 'burbs (we'll be car pooling), but please
take this opportunity to ensure our voice is heard and to make connections to good
folks we otherwise would rarely encounter.
Look for the announcements and let us know if you plan to attend.
Thanks for enduring my plea!
Aparna
