Federation to Offer 55 VISTA Volunteers in 2004

(12/17/03) The National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions
(the Federation), which serves as a national AmeriCorps*VISTA sponsorship
site, has opened applications for up to 55 full-time VISTA volunteers to be
made available to credit unions around the country. This number is up from
the 40 available slots in the 2003-2004 program-year.

The Federation's VISTA Project provides VISTA volunteers for one year of
full-time service to assist credit unions expand their human resources and
develop programs and services that build long-term wealth and increase
savings in low-income communities.

VISTA, often described as the "domestic Peace Corps," seeks to stimulate
citizen participation to address the needs of American communities,
especially those of the poor, the disadvantaged, and the elderly.

Over the past 10 years, the Federation has placed more than 210 VISTAs in 80
credit unions across the United States. VISTAs work to research, develop,
and implement asset development projects, such as financial literacy,
micro-enterprise loans, and individual development accounts (IDAs) in the
credit unions where they are placed.

Saguache County CU (Moffat, Colorado) is an example of how a credit union
can leverage special programs such as VISTA to achieve its fiscal and
programmatic goals. "The VISTA program has single-handedly allowed us to
expand our resources," said Richard Wertz, Director of Saguache County CU.
"Without their help, we would not have been able to receive the technical
improvement grants that we have so desperately needed."

Federation VISTA volunteers are only available to members of the Federation.
