I'm forwarding to you some information from Demian Kogan, a 2003 Midwest Academy intern, who has been involved in organizing to end the use of Chief Illiniwek at UIUC. The issue is coming to a vote at the board meeting in March, so this is a crucial time for people to come out on this issue. Demian's note is below, and below that the specifics from other people who are organizing this event in Chicago.

For those chicago people around, the U of I board of trustee's is having thier montly board meeting @ the uic campus this thursday at 8:30. I'm speaking at it about a resolution they are voting on in march to retire the chief. If you can, please come out to support. Local Native American groups are organzing a protest @ 7:30 before the pubic comment session where i'll be speaking. Come say hi!

Native American activists in Chicago from various organizations, like the Native American Educational Services (NAES) College, are organizing a peaceful protest at the upcoming UI Board of Trustees Meeting at UIC on January 15th, 2004! Be there when the UI Board members arrive for their meeting! The protest will feature Native American drumming groups and sign-holding with slogans like "American Indians Are People Not Mascots."
This is a great opportunity for those students in or near Chicago for winter break and for UI alumni now in Chicago to show their support of Trustee Carroll's resolution to remove the "Chief" from the UI! We must show the UI Board that people across the state of Illinois want "Chief Illiniwek" to go!
Following the protest, come here two of PRC's members speak during the Public Comment Session component of the UI Board Meeting. The meeting will be inside the Union in Rooms B and C, starting at 8:30am.
