Interested in Working on Development in India?

The American India Foundation is currently accepting
applications for the 2004-05 Service Corps Fellowship.
The Fellowship aims to develop American leaders with
experience in Indian development issues while
providing valuable capacity-building skills to high
caliber Indian non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

The Fellowship annually selects 20 outstanding young
Americans who have demonstrated an interest in India
and possess leadership and professional skills that
will allow them to contribute effectively to Indian
NGOs.  Fellows are placed with leading NGOs who work
in a variety of fields, including but not limited to,
primary education, micro-credit, HIV/AIDS and human
rights.  Fellows work on a variety of projects ranging
from community organizing to business planning to
research surveys to public advocacy.  Each Fellow is
assigned a mentor at their host organization to guide
their projects.

All Fellows receive a monthly stipend that includes
money for living, housing, food and transport.
Fellows also receive supplemental health insurance
coverage and travel to and from India.  During the
program year, AIF’s staff in India provides on-going
training and support including a ten-day orientation
and midpoint and endpoint retreats.

The program was started in June of 2001 and has to
date awarded 71 fellowships for development projects
throughout India.  Alumni of the program have
continued their engagement with India – some return
to India to continue their work on development issues,
others work with US-based organizations (corporate and
non-profit) that have an interest in India, and others
go on to graduate education in fields such as
business, law, medicine and public policy.

All applicants must fulfill the following basic
criteria:

Be between the ages of 21 and 35 on September 1, 2004
Have achieved an undergraduate degree prior to
starting the program
Be a US Citizen or US Permanent Resident

The application deadline for the program is January
31, 2004.  Selected candidates will be interviewed in
February and March and Fellowship offers will be made
at the end of March 2004.
