Subject: [hatem_abudayyeh] HATE CRIME AGAINST SOUTH ASIANS--JAPANESE AMER.
CITIZENS LGE. ASKING FOR SUPPORTFour South Asian American men in their early 20s were kicked and
beaten with beer bottles in a racially-motivated attack outside a
nightclub on Chicago's near west side in November of 2002. The two
attackers asked the victims, who are of Indian descent, if they were
Taliban and told them to go back to their own country. Then the
two men started punching and kicking the victims and knocked two of
them unconscious. One victim's cheekbone was shattered. He has
undergone two surgeries to repair the nerve damage and insert an
implant to rebuild his orbital bone. The other victim needed eight
stitches to close the cut to the back of his head.
The attackers have been charged with aggravated battery and hate
crime. One perpetrator, Joseph Gutierrez, pled guilty on Wednesday,
January 15th, but was NOT sentenced to any jail time. He received
two years probation and community service. It is possible that the
second defendant,! George Petrosky, may enter a plea the next court
date, Tuesday, Jan. 20th.
What can you do to help?
Attend the court date for George Petrosky on Tuesday, January 20,
