Interfaith is creating a new staff position, fully funded under this grant for its duration (extending it depends upon future funding).  We are looking for an individual who is passionate about civil rights, fair housing, and willing to work to bring about racially and economically integrated communities in the northern suburbs of Chicago; lives in, or has lived in, the northern suburbs (and so has an understanding of the communities, its politics, and its people); has some experience in community organizing; and has experience in community education.  Bi-lingual English/Spanish abilities is a plus.

                JOB DESCRIPTION

 

              FAIR HOUSING OUTREACH SPECIALIST

INTERFAITH HOUSING CENTER OF THE NORTHERN SUBURBS

 

The Interfaith Housing Center of the Northern Suburbs is a community-based fair housing agency founded in 1972 servicing northern Cook and southern Lake Counties.  Interfaith has over 40 religious congregations and 20 civic organizations as members.  Interfaith is seeking an energetic individual, committed to building community support for fair and affordable housing.

 

Purpose:           To conduct community education, advocacy, research, and investigative activities related to the promotion of fair housing in the northern suburbs.

 

Status:                          Reports directly to the Fair Housing Coordinator

40 hrs./week

 

Responsibilities:

 

1.         FAIR HOUSING EDUCATION

 

a)         Assist in the development of a Fair Housing Advocate curriculum

b)         Conduct fair housing workshops for current and potential north suburban residents

c)         Provide technical assistance and information to congregations, staff members of social service agencies and community groups, real estate profess! ionals, condo associations, banks, government agencies, and others regarding fair housing laws

d)         Encourage owners to accept families with Housing Choice Vouchers

 

2.         FAIR HOUSING ADVOCACY

 

a)         Organize member congregation and member organization activities in support of fair housing goals

b)         Organize local residents as needed to advocate on their own behalf

c)         Represent Interfaith in local and regional housing advocacy groups, including the Chicago Area Fair Housing Alliance

d)         Advocate for the development of Human Relations Commissions and Fair Housing Ordinances in all communities through participation and technical assistance

 

3.         FAIR HOUSING COMPLIANCE

 

a)         Assist the Fair Housing Coordinator as needed in the investigation of complaints of housing discrimination

b)         Assist in developing strategies to prevent, address, and resolve incidents of discrimination in housing

c)         Refer victims of discrimination to appropriate legal agencies, including helping to secure legal counsel

d)         Locate victims of discrimination through local publicity, community meetings, collaboration with municipalities

e)         Conduct demographic and related research in support of activities

f)          Monitor real estate ! ads and publications

g)         Monitor municipalities regarding the extent to which they are affirmatively furthering fair housing

 

4.            SPECIAL EVENTS AND AGENCY MARKETING

 

a)         Organize fair housing month (April) activities

b)         Utilize the news media for outreach and education activities

 

Salary:  Commensurate with experience, $25,000-$30,000

 

Requirements:

 

1.         College degree

2.         Highly personable and able to work with people of different races, ages, and backgrounds

3.         Strong oral and written communica! tion skills

4.            Experience in, and commitment to, fair housing

5.            Knowledge of the northern suburbs of Chicago essential

6.         Public speaking and strong group facilitation skills

7.         Strong research skills

8.         Highly organized

9.            Energetic and creative in approach

10.            Experience in community organizing, leadership development, and housing advocacy

11.       Interest in being member of a team committed to fair housing and civil rights

12.       Access to a car

13.       Able to work flexible hours

14.            Knowledge of Spanish desirable
