O Lover of Life: Experimental Narrative from India
(Brought to you by Conversations at the Edge, Department of Film, Video and New Media, School of the Art Institute of Chicago)

The Razors Edge
Dir. Vipin Vijay

Winter Trail
O Lover of Life
Dir. Pooja Kaul

Ancient and contemporary arts of India are at the center of three startling video works by Indian makers, which blur reality and fiction with their experimental approach toward narrative. Presented by Monica Bhasin, graduate student in Film and Video at the School of the Art Institute.

Oracles of Kerala state are the subject of Vipin Vijay's THE RAZOR'S EDGE (Kshurasya Dhara) (2002, 28 min.), a quasi-documentary in which frenzied dances, rock-art images, ribald songs, and ecstatic trances are cannily arranged to make the viewer aware of the constructedness of documentary reality. WINTER TRAIL by Pooja Kaul (10 min, 2002, digital video) follows two women in pursuit of Amrita Sher-Gil, one of India's first modern painters. Kaul's O LOVER OF LIFE (Rasiken Re) merges narrative with musical structure in presenting the cautious attraction of two neighbors in an apartment block.
