Call for closing night show for Asian American Film Festival:

Mars, Marriage and Mass DistrAction

It seems everybodys talking politics these days. Tired of being told what you
believe from political pundits and public opinion polls? Whos being polled
anyway? Nobody I know. Whether it be witty or angry, utopian or bemused,
critical or celebratory this performance takes all that palpable anxiety and
turns it into the carnavelsque hallucination (I prefer to use the word
"nightmare" instead of hallucination but perhaps thats too negative) of the
past three years. Come experience our take on the current state of affairs
through a colorful interweaving of the spoken word, music, video, and dance
talents of the Asian American community of Chicago.

Note from director:
Not interested in doing a variety show with witty sarcastic comedic bits strung
together. If were going to use humor as a tool/weapon to fight for change let
it be scathing and smart. How to use our diverse performative talents to create
a cohesive message? Whether it be witty or angry, utopian or bemused, critical
or celebratory this message does not necessarily have to be prescriptive. In my
opinion an articulate and eloquent description of the state of affairs as we
see it IS part of the much needed prescription!
This election year (actually it started way before-- like during the last
election year!)has been been a rather surreal and hallucinatory experience.
Unfortunately it is all too real. Our collective anxiety is palpable. The rise
in nationalism and xenophobia, the shaky economy, individual freedoms slipping,
the attack on reproductive freedom and affirmative action and of course the
utter horror of going through another useless and unjust war. But like a dream
there is the constant awareness that things are shifting: exciting new
possibilities are afoot.

So I see the structure of this show based loosely on a dreamscape. Am
interested in capturing the carnivalesque multiplicity of this election year.
Hopefully this way we can embrace all the talents and ideas our group has to
offer without it being a variety show, but something in which the structure of
the show has a meaning as well.
