Be a Volunteer Tutor at Lakefront Supportive Housing

 

The many men and women who live in buildings operated by Lakefront Supportive Housing seek tutors for a variety of reasons: to improve their reading and writing skills, to work toward their GED, to improve their employability, or to work towards a college degree. For some the rewards of learning is being able to write a letter to their family, reading a prescription or balancing their budget. For others it is entering a GED program, filling out a job application, or performing better at a job.

 

The role of a Volunteer Tutor is a vital one. Our volunteers meet with the student once a week for at least one hour and work on individual lessons. They work with their students in small groups or one-on-one and help them identify their educational goals and develop a personalized approach to their learning. Tutoring is a rewarding experience for both parties. While the student learns new skills and gains confidence in dealing with life issues, the tutor often gains a deeper connection to his/her community and a sense of accomplishment at being a part of the solution.

 

A national leader in addressing the problem of homelessness, Lakefront Supportive Housing (www.lakefront.org) operates nine affordable housing buildings throughout the Chicago area. Each building is equipped with supportive services including case management, property management, learning opportunities, computer and/or library access and a wide variety of programs and activities throughout the year. These services are crucial support systems to the tenants, all of whom have been either homeless or in danger of homelessness at some point in their lives, as they strive toward self-sufficiency and independence.

 

Desired Qualities:

�         Desire to work with and develop personal relationships with people of different cultural and educational backgrounds

�         Willingness to travel within the city and meet students at locations convenient to the student and the tutor.

�         Patience and willingness to learn from the student.

�         Acceptance of different learning styles and willingness to work with them.

�         High School diploma or equivalent.

 

Commitment:

�         Must attend two six-hour trainings sessions.

�         A minimum one hour per week with the student

�         A minimum six-month commitment
