Open Position

Title: Chicago Field Organizer - Fair Trade Coffee and Trade
Department: C&E Department
Organization: Oxfam America
Reports to: Trade Campaign Manager

Coordinates with: The Organizer position works primarily with the Trade
Campaign Manager and Fair Trade Coffee Organizer to develop and carry-out
specific grassroots campaigns around Fair Trade Coffee and Oxfam's Make
Trade Fair campaign in the Chicago-area. To implement grassroot! s campaigns,
the Organizer will help support and strategize with the Chicago Committee on
Fair Trade.

This is a temporary position as part of a pilot project and a special
community effort, and will be re-evaluation for extension in May 2004.


Specific Responsibilities:

1. Work 20 hours per week with the Oxfam organizing team and local
coalition to plan, develop and implement public education and issue advocacy
campaigns around Oxfam's Fair Trade agenda.

2. Work as Oxfam's "in-kind" staff contribution as a field coordinator
for the Chicago Committee on Fair Trade, the local coalition that has been
initiated around Fair Trade product promotion and policy work. This work is
jointly supervised by the Oxfam Trade Campaign Manager and the X (one person
from the coalition).

3. Work with local activists and Oxfam staff to plan and implement
state and local media strategies, including free and earned media events,
m! edia contacts, editorial mailings, and op-ed placement around World Fair
Trade Day and promotion of Fair Trade Certified products.

4. Prepare local organizing materials, issue updates, action alerts,
and media materials needed to implement grassroots and promotional work.

5. Phone, email and other communication and occasional travel to
targeted and surrounding areas to develop and carry out grassroots
organizing and coalition building around CAFTA.


6. Maintain a level of knowledge on the substantive issues underlying
campaigns so as to be able to respond to information requests from local
activists.

7. Advise on long-term plan for Oxfam's Chicago-based grassroots
efforts.

8. Other duties as assigned.

Travel and Hours:
Local and regional travel required. Must have own car.
Approximately 20 hours a week.


Qualifications:

Education:
College degree or equivalent work experience required.

Experience and Core Competencies:
1. Familiarity with advocacy techniques and strategy.
2. At least two years of organizing, electoral and/or media experience at
the local, state or national level.
3. Good written and oral communication skills.
4. Good motivational and interpersonal skills.
5. Well organized.
6. Good computer skills, including proficiency in WordPerfect and
familiarity with database programs helpful.
7. Ability to work well with a wide range of people.
8. Works well under pressure, and adapt to changing situations on a daily
basis.
9. Self-initiative.


Preferred:
1. Enthusiasm for the public interest.
2. Interest in developing new skills.


Wage:
$16.50-$20.00/hour, based on experience.
