Regarding Screeing her movie:
-------------------------------------------
I am here in America/ Chicago on invitation by "Women in Director's
Chair International Film and Video Festival". Two of my films say
"Mathamma" and "Parai" had been selected respectively in Ethnography and
International sections. This is the 23rd annual WIDC festival featuring
80 films from say 50 different countries. I represented our country with
two films. I was glad to have two works which got selected out of
thousands of entries all over the world. This festival is in specific a
very reputed festival and
Considered as the best in the domain of "Films by Women, of Women and
for Women ".Quite experimental, offstream and radical. Please see for
more deatils; www.widc.org and
Http://www.chicagoreader.com/movies/sidebars/WIDC2004.html. I can humbly
say my films are very important in a way that they have created a social
change. Mathamma brought the whole issue out to light and kind of
created a movement in media, women organizations and mass organisations.
Attention was brought in, Interventions made and this year in the annual
thiruvizha of the particular village cluster (when they usually marry
the female children off to their deity Mathamma) no girl was offered
according to the observation. It might take a long time to completely
cure the practice but the intervention and eventually the changes
happening in the locality is remarkable and I consider that as a very
positive outcome of the film.(Dailies Hindu and Express featured this)
Parai, was first run as a movement and then made into a film. This
actually handled a very sensitive casteism in our society and I really
had to face a lot for that. Whole shooting and post production was done
in the midst of lot of threats from various sources. Still I am
endangered by lot of caste organizations. When the film went to Censor,
The Censor board refused to through the film but had an enquiry with the
Women's commission and SCST Commission. Consequently the team fact found
the situation and set up the enquiry and introduced a lot of schemes to
the affected. Both the films are refused by Censor but i am not stopping
to screen them from grassroots to the international forums. My
intentions are to create a dialogue into the issues among our fellow
community and others. I wish to be addressed as a Media Activist rather
a Film Maker. I beleive in Films for social change and have a passion to
persuade them till the end. Please click for more deatils;
