2. Below is culled from Funkadesi's e-update:
A CONCERT YOU CAN NOT MISS -- THIS SATURDAY @ THE VIC!!!
A note from Funkadesi's Rahul Sharma: If you've never seen Zakir
Hussain perform, you must. Not only does his tabla playing stretch the
boundaries of what we consider humanly possible -- he has an authentic
flair and charm about how he presents Indian music and culture. I've had
the privilege and pleasure of learning tabla from him for a couple of
different summers. I have also seen him perform over a dozen times, and
I must tell you that this particular concert format is the most
mind-blowing -- MY FAVORITE CONCERT OF ALL TIME! (The last time he did
something like this in Chicago was some 8 years back!) He has gathered an
ensemble of some of the finest North and South Indian percussionists
around, as well as notable feature artists on violin, sarangi, drum kit,
etc. I guarantee that this show will well be worth your money!! Again,
for details on the show and how to get tickets:

3. FUNKADESI IN TIME MAGAZINE!!!!!
The latest issue of Time magazine has a piece about the popularization
of South Asian culture in the West. They give a shout out to
Funkadesi, not to mention Chicago's own DJ Warp (aka Brian Keigher). Here's a
little blurb! BTW, it was only a matter of time since someone made the
OBVIOUS Funkadesi/Britney Spears connection. I guess we're not that
innocent . . . .

"The music, movies and literature of South Asia are the most popular in
the world. Now America is falling under their spell. . . . One of the
most fertile areas for East-West cross-pollinations is music. . . . At
music clubs and universities, crowds can listen to Funkadesi, a band
that mixes Indian music with reggae and funk. . . . . Hip-hopper Jay-Z
and British-based Indian producer Panjabi MC served up Beware of the
Boys. . . . Even Britney Spears is getting her Ganges on; she used
British South Asian producer Rishi Rich on her last album."
