Basic Purpose of Position:
Under general supervision, installs, maintains,
upgrades, performance tunes, backs up, restores, and assures the
integrity of SQL based databases on a variety of platforms. Works
with a variety of hardware and software technologies. Works closely
with the other I.T. associates in the areas of application
development, database management, network, and technical support and
training.
Essential Job Functions:
• Designs, develops, creates, installs, modifies, and maintains SQL
databases, data warehouses, cubes, and Reporting Services resident on
server platforms residing on a variety of technical environments,
assuring that the database architecture balances technical efficiency
with ease of use.
• Assures integrity of databases including backing up all databases on
a scheduled basis.
• Develops and maintains restore procedures. Conducts periodic tests
to insure restores can be done quickly and accurately with the
objective of minimizing disruption to the business.
• Monitors database and data warehouse performance and suggests and
implements improvements where needed.
• Assists I.T. Operations in the identification and resolution of
production problems.
• Works with application management to develop and maintain Client's
Database Best Practices and Standards documentation. Assures all
database activity adheres to published standards.
• Works with application developers on development projects to assure
all new databases meet Client design and performance standards.
Assists application development staff with project implementations and
testing.
• Performs change management activities for database schema and
related source material.
• Develops and maintains stored SQL procedures within the various
databases as needed.
• Develops and maintains Integration Services packages as required.
• Develops, maintains, and executes mass change/load procedures as
required by the various applications and Analysis Services
implementations using SQL databases. Develops, maintains, and
monitors extract-transform-load activities into data warehouse to
assure timely and accurate data available for business intelligence
measurements.
• Coordinates activities with network management staff, AS/400
application development teams, and AS/400 Database Administrator, and
other technical support staff in all activities as needed to insure
overall I.T. objectives are met.
• Assists in the evaluation and selection of appropriate database
packages and related products to support I.T. processing.
• Provides training support to other I.T. associates as necessary to
assure overall support of Client's business needs.
• As needed, participates in meetings and reviews with the end user
community, and assists users with operational problems.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Performance Evaluation Criteria:
Successful performance of these job functions should result in:
• Development of technical solutions that improve the operational
efficiency of application software as it supports the business.
• Timely resolution of system problems based on assigned priority and
overall objectives of the I.T. department.
• Complete and up-to-date documentation that can be easily understood
and used by other I.T. associates.
• SQL database performance and functionality that meets the
requirements specified in the system design and application
specifications.
Qualifications:
Technical skills:
• Thorough knowledge of SQL.
• Database administration knowledge of MS SQL Server.
• Knowledge of database administration in a LAN/WAN environment.
• DB2/400 database administration knowledge desirable.
Previous experience:
• Five years or more experience in SQL database administration.
Education:
• Four year college degree in computer science preferred, or
combination of education and work experience conferring equivalent
results.
Other qualifications:
• Good oral and written communications skills
• Ability to work well as a member of a team
• Desire to work and learn in a variety of technical environments.
• Self-starter able to make efficient use of time.
