I know, the hardware controller I'm using now is a
 Compaq Computer Corporation Smart-2/P RAID
and I'm quite happy with it, I havn't seen any tests of this against
Linux MD.

I am aware that Linux MD is faster and better than almost any IDE raid
controllers out there, but the Smart2 feels very good to me.

No, the data and log gets to live on raw devices without filesystems, so
there will be no filesystem between SAPDB and the disks.

The filesystem is ext3 and it's quite fast enough, the main load on the
box is not on the filesystem.
