It seems that the Web Tools distribution does not install correctly on
Windows 2000 Professional.

I am trying to evaluate SAP DB, so I followed the Windows installation
instructions on http://www.sapdb.org/sap_db_nt.htm. First, I installed the
server according to the instructions in serverinst_73eng.pdf, then rebooted
the computer. Then I installed the Web Tools according to the instructions
in webtoolinst_73eng.pdf (which is a lot harder to follow than the online
hypertext version!) and rebooted again. Then I opened a command prompt
window and started the SAP DB web server, I think, but my browser couldn't
open a page.

The installation instructions encourage users to edit the Windows registry
(bad form!), so I opened the registry and found that the key for the web
server was missing. I created the default key and added the documented
default values to it, but still the web server didn't produce a page for my
browser.

I noticed that the Web Tools (web) folder, which was installed on my disk,
includes a config subfolder, and the config folder has a registry
configuration file (wa.reg) and a mime.types file. The registry file was
apparently never run and it seems to include a lot of settings besides the
ones that are documented in the installation guide, and some of its settings
are inappropriate for my system (in particular, the file paths from
c:\sapdb-web and c:\temp instead of the actual paths on my system). The
mime.types file is one level below the web folder, which the installation
guide suggests, in the documented default registry settings, is where it
should be.

Also, there is an index.html file in the sapdb/depend/Documents folder, but
none in the sapdb/web or sapdb/web/Documents folder, despite that index.html
is documented as the SAP DB webserver's default document and
sapdb/web/Documents is the default DocumentRoot.

It seems to me that this Web Tools package must have been released without
any testing of whether it correctly installs the SAP DB web server. What a
mess!

Is there another web tools package coming out, or is there a procedure I
should follow to get this software installed and working? I have high hopes
for using SAP DB and installing it for my customers, but so far, nothing
works.

  Richard
