Hi Nikolai,

if you get a -8003 (Log and data must be compatible) in your situation means, that you
tried to start the database with the data of the other database and the log of the
previous database (The database kernel tries to use the log to update the data to the
last logged state during a start).

Please reinstall your database with the Installation Wizard and choose "Installation
for Recovery". The database is initialized (the previous log is deleted!) and you can
than restore the backup of the other database.

Best regards,

Subject: Problem with restoring backups

Hi,

I'm testing basic backup / restoring and I'm having some problems restoring
backups from another database instance. (I'm using DB Manager GUI). I can
restore the backup from another database successfully (at least it gives no
error message), but when I press restart nothing happens, I just get an
hourglass which seems to last forever. Also, trying to set the db to online
doesn't work. I can restore a backup made from the same db on the same
machine, but I need to be able to restore a backup set on another machine in
case there's some problems with the main server.

The error message I when I try to get the database online again looks
something like this:

-24988 sql error [db_warm -f]; -8003,Message not available

>From the documentation it seems that this has something to do with the log
and data areas, which "must be compatible", that probably means that
settings must be identical? I have tried using to identical databases as
source and destination, but that doesn't seem to work either.

The documentation remedy is to "specify the correct backup version" and also
import the necessary log files if any. (Allthough that should not be
necessary since the backups are consistent).

So I'm guessing the problem is that I'm producing an "invalid" backup that
cannot be restored on another machine without some extra files?
