Clearly, logic fails to be obvious to me; 

a) same PHP works OK for all other databases, but not for SAP DB?
b) same unixODBC works OK for all other databases, but not for SAP DB?

FYI; 

I was informed by Thomas that this problem was already reported last September 
and actually fixed, but not in the released driver. Fixed driver here:

ftp://ftp.sap.com/pub/sapdb/bin/patch/sapdb-odbc-linux-i386-7.3.0.30a.tgz
