When you started talking about 'real world' I assumed that you meant
real databases, not some toy like mysql.
MySQL is an RDBMS, nothing more, nothing less.
MySQL doesn't offer much features like referencial contraints etc. which a _real_ database _should_ have!

it's not a toy, but a much simpler database.

I guess what I'm saying is: "If you think mysql isn't garbage, then you
don't know the first thing about what databases are good for and you
should probably just keep using mysql".
MySQL should only be used, if there is a reason to use it!
In the past these reasons were:
1. it's cheap (other enterprise-dbs are too expensive - but now there's SAPDB!!!)
2. it's popular because it is cheap (if it's popular to jump out of a window i wouldn't do that either, would you?)
3. it's cheap
4. it's not expensive
5. and finally: it's cheap
