Oh, I just found the error. The database machine was getting it's user via NIS. Some months (!) ago the machine that is the nisserver lost the sapdb user and sapdb group. So access to paths, e.g. to /usr/spool/sql was denied. After I added user/group sapdb to the NIS server and re-made the NIS tables the database startup worked as expected.
