Hi, > I've got a project where I have to design a database with an approximately size of 500 GB and possibly even > more. The hardware which I planned for the database is an Intel Server Board equipped with 8 GB of DDR RAM, two > Intel Xeon processors with 2,8 GHz and an Intel RAID Controller (PCI 64) with U320-SCSI IBM harddisks in a RAID > 5 compound structure. As OS I plan to use Linux with a modified 2.4 kernel.
I think that heavily depends on the application you're running. I can only tell for SAP systems but our test-/development system, which has several clients, has a volume of ~ 550 GB and performs quite well. But again, this depends on the application you're deploying (many/few tables, big/little tables etc.) The database itself can handle that very well and I know some other SAP customers that crossed the 1 TB border...
