Well the tricky part is that I can write a non-free application and not link it against anything other than the LGPL'ed ODBC driver manager and then distribute that.


The user then links my non-free application to the GPL'ed mysql/sapdb driver and this makes it illegal for him to distribute the resulting system.

The GPL doesn't limit what you can do with the software as long as you don't distribute the resulting product.
