All versions up to the current release of sapdb are still completely free and will remain so. Only the future works as yet to be produced by the MySQL & SAPDB teams will be under full GPL.
Remember, what MySQL asks for a commercial license is pittance compared to the other dbms', once SAPDB falls under this scheme you will still be getting one hell of a bargain. If you find another dbms that matches up then I wish you well. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Matthias Tams Sent: Sunday, June 15, 2003 6:43 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Stunned by this bad news Hello all, we just did a mid size project based on SAP-DB and were very happy with its LGPL/GPL scheme since you could really call SAP-DB to be FREE as in http://www.sapdb.org. Now, I suggest removing the "FREE" from SAP-DB. I was really stunned by the news about the licensing shift to the commercial model of MySQL. We chose SAP-DB because it was free and because it was technologically superior to most of the other free DBs. Now, it won't be free anymore for commercial projects and its unsure what will happen technologically. This whole decision is very bad news, you remember the lawsuit of MySQL AB against some company (don't remember the name) because GPL violation? I will look for another really FREE database.
