I wound up killing those two processes. The RPM install then went fine. My
remaining steps
were:
  x_server start
  dbmcli -d <dbname> -u <dbmname>,<dbmpasswd>
     db_register
     param_checkall
     db_online
     load_systab

Why did I get this error on load_systab? My process is from "Patch
Installation with SDBINST and
Follow-Up Actions".
   ERR
   -24909,ERR_DBAUNKNOWN: SYSDBA unknown

The database was online, so I connected with DBMGUI. I ran some checks and
all appears AOK.
I found Configuration, Upgrade System Tables. It required the DBA password
and the DOMAIN
password, then ran successfully.

Thank you all for your patience with my many newbie questions and your
responses. Hopefully the
process I have worked out will be of value for others that wish to patch
with RPM.
