PS The steps I was doing to do the backup are (after opening a dbmcli
session):
> medium_put backup2 c:\backup2 FILE DATA 0 0 YES
> util_connect
> backup_start backup2 DATA

Subject: RE: Quickest way to export and import data
Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
At this point we just want the quickest way to do it, and don't mind it
being unreadable.
So, I switched to the DBExtract and DBLoad - this works fine, until I try
and use the database and I discovered that it is now readonly until I do a
backup! Doesn't this defeat the purpose?! I believe this is true for the
fastload, too.
I then tried to do a backup, but get the error:
dbmcli on portal>backup_start backup1 DATA
ERR
-24927,ERR_TOOLCHK: external backup tool not found
The file c:\program files\sapdb\indep_data\wrk\PORTAL\bsi.env is
missing or unre
adable.
Any ideas how to fix this? I can't find bsi.env in any of my database work
directories.
If I need to do a backup afterwards, can I not just do a backup and restore
instead of extract/load etc.? I did try this, but I got a wierd "sql
error" when I tried the restore.
Would appreciate any help you can give as I seem to be hitting walls
whatever direction I go in!
Thanks,
David

the answer depends on several preconditions and circumstances.
here are the most important ones:
if you like your extracted data in a *readable* format you have to choose
the
*compressed* or *formatted* format. if your tabledefinition doesn't contain
*blob* columns
you can use the *fastload* command to load the data.

*fastload* isn't supported on tables with *blob* columns.
otherwise you can use the **quickest** internal format *pages* to transport
your data
