Thanks Chris, I found the error through the shell, it had NOTHING to do with the category_tree as I suspected, but with an error in a custom template that referenced satchmo.payment.common.views instead the new satchmo.payment.views. Apparently on my dev machine, the package update didn't remove the common directory, so the code kept working, where as on my server I deleted the old package and uploaded the new one.
