Check if your locale_code is supported by the server.
Mine is
LANGUAGE_CODE = 'it_IT.utf8'
In my local-settings.py I also have
LANGUAGES = (
('it', gettext_noop('Italiano')),
('en', gettext_noop('English')),
)
