Yep I did! Here is the exact steps I have done:

1) Installation and integration of the new payment module
2) I went to domain.com/settings/ to activate it and at the same time
I disabled dummy module
3) I restarted the server.
4) I went for a test run in which the new payment module appear.

Now, if something goes wrong here, that is, if either my module
crashes or the customer leaves the store by a redirect sent from
djano the system automatically set "payment dummy" back as the
default. Moreover, if I go to domain.com/settings and try to change it
I get the described error message.

Thanks a lot for trying to help me out. I appreciate it :)

Best,
Troels
