My main reason for using postgresql was down to mysql's the lack of support for good authentication protocols. I was attempting to create a hosting services with Kerberos auth, or SASL with a Kerberos backend. I got the "feeling" that mysql was more of a PHP of the database world. No real hard evidence for the selection.
