No, I don't think there is; you did it the best way you could. When it comes to upgrade time, you will have to compare the templates you have modified with the new/updated satchmo templates and decide what action to take. I don't lose too much sleep over this because if you look at the history of the product templates, for example, you will see that they don't churn much, and the changes that have been made recently have been geared toward flexibility (e.g. removing hard-coded urls) or simply updating external dependencies (e.g. sorl_thumbnail, jquery). In other words, they don't seem to change that much (historically over the past year, anyway).
