I used Magento for a project a couple of years ago as well. I'm familiar with the internals of it, as well as setting up hosting. It does require a fair amount of resources dedicated to it. Since then we've become a Python/Django shop and we're re-doing a site for a client who is using Magento now. She is more or less happy with Magento (with some customizations) but we're a bit happier with Satchmo.
Satchmo follows Django conventions well, and Magento is all it's own conventions, which, frankly I didn't like very much. Satchmo has been very easy for us to skin and customize and get projects finished, and that's really what is important to us.
