Yeah 8000 products could cause it to choke. You can also break down the feeds into categories. Assuming your 8000 products are split into multiple categories (hopefully a fair number of them), you can bring up their individual feeds with this path: http://yourdomainname/feed/atom/category-slug/
The easiest way to find the category-slug is to go to that category page and grab the last section of the link, then paste that to the end of the feed list.
