I tried to implement that some time ago and it was a terrible pain. As Dave says, you have to do the AJAX call in Javascript in the template. And you have to be very careful about the cross-site request forgery token (you have to include an special tag into your templates and get its value via DOM). On the other hand, it seemed that the user session was not the same one for AJAX calls and for regular non-AJAX calls, to getting the information from the cart can be tricky.
