I'm working on a similar project to watch my laundry, and send an alert when the washer or dryer has stopped. That's not a very hard problem, and will be an amusing little project. The followup will be a camera that lets me know when the chickens have laid eggs. OpenCV works fairly well for face detection, but face recognition is still very dicey last time I checked. A solution that may better match the current state of technology is hand-sign recognition.
