There's also all kinds of other events.. Amateur Radio Field Day is in June which lasts a weekend (free), hackerspaces doing their projects or hanging out at the MCS. Probably tho self-study is your better option unless he's ready to take a summer class or two at a community college. Certainly there are tours with local companies you can tie to the self-study: http://www.boeing.com/commercial/tours/index.html Tours will help give him an idea of what the job is about day to day...
