Follow-up Comment #1, bugs #2122 (project savane):
Whatever practical reasons we may come up with to justify setting the size to
something smaller than the one the user specifically configured his browser to
use, there will never be right do blatantly ignore what he configured.
It is not true that nowadays many sites are still using unappropriately size
settings. Since 2 years I use a reasonnable default size that is honored by
most websites.
Also, Konqueror at least remember, per site, the custom sized that may have
been applied. Since usually konqueror is less powerful than mozilla, I expect
recent mozilla to do the same.
So it is neither true to say users will have to change settings everytime.
The bottom line is: we cannot endorse bad practice just because they are
common. Two wrong does not make a right. Most web browser had to deal with
such mistake (for instance, konqueror provide the possibility to set a minimal
size; I believe such feature would be useless without some people setting size
excessively small).
There a common issue with web designer: they are thinking of their crap as
art. As result, they have the feeling their job is to define pixel by pixel
how it should looks like on users screen. But, as publicist, they pay very
little attention to the whole usability of their stuff. So they'll be happy to
put something very small because that's their design, even if their user have
trouble reading and explicitely configure his browser to use big size. And as
result, someone you like small fonts on his screen will get something
practically unreadable if he correctly configure his browser to show small
fonts (because 10pt + smaller + smaller = not much).
So let's not be a pain in the ass by assuming how users configure their
browser. When they say I want THIS as default size, give them THIS as default
size. That's their problem. It is not up to us to judge if it really makes
sense or not. And it's not good to assume we have to put it smaller because
they probably oversized what they want because plenty of website just
disregard their settings.
Anything else? :)
