Have you any docs related to this?

I'm running etch on my desktops computers and the manual says that dot
is legitimate separator.

The changelog of the debian package does not contradict that

coreutils (5.2.1-1) unstable; urgency=low
    [...]
    - `chown user.group file' now has its traditional meaning even when
conforming to POSIX 1003.1-2001, so long as no user has a name
containing `.' that happens to equal `user.group'.

If there's really a problem with the dots, there's plenty of places
where it should be changed. But I have no problem with sarge or etch
with dots.

And as said I my previous mail, this error was really what the error
message said: the users was invalid, not created by sv_users for a
reason I ignore.
