Yep, it was me doing something stupid...  There was a newline in the 
pasted key.   Sorry for the noise, and thank you for helping me.

Checked that the public key on Savannah is correct?  I.e. it should be
the `ssh-rsa ... foo@bar' string.  I know I screwed up by putting in
differently formated key once.  Look similar to a private key, but the
header said `PUBLIC KEY'.
