Follow-up Comment #2, sr #111427 (group administration): Thank you, Bob, for replying. I just tried this again. Same login name, same everything else, AND IT INEXPLICABLY WORKED. At least, I was able to clone, and the *ssh* command said

Whatever previously failed has now succeeded.
