Hello,
as far as I understand it, the copyright for the original was assigned to the
FSF. But now that you are improving it, you should claim copyright for it,
too.
Therefore, please add a copyright line with your name to the file.
We also recommend to upgrade the project to GPLv3+, but this is not
mandatory.
