This is all probably true, but what Microsoft also seems to be ignoring is that
for most small to mid-sized businesses, the Cloud is just not feasible or
justifiable. The costs are prohibitive over time and by doing this they will
simply force smaller companies into using other solutions all together.

Charlie,

It is not that Microsoft does not know what it is doing. It knows it very
well. Microsoft feels that the IT Pros are an impediment to its business
goals, not an assistance. I know that Susan would disagree and claim that
Microsoft still needs people on the ground to make its products work well, but
this is not the case in the higher echelons where the policy is being hammered
out. They are looking to move a great number of corporations to their cloud
services where everything is hosted without the need (or minimal need) of a
complex IT structure on the ground. Thus, Microsoft wants most of IT Pros to
disappear as this would open to the door for a number of companies to move, for
example, to hosted Exchange (or other solutions). They know that they cannot
just march in in other people’s businesses and fire IT personnel so they are
trying to “degrade” the IT professionals as best as they can.

This is the way of the market. When Microsoft wanted the IT Pros to push its
products to the enterprise, it provided to them generous benefits. Now, that
they are impediment, it would do as much as possible to get them out of the way.

In the normal terms and conditions manner of speaking, as in “using it for the
programs designed intent”, yes. Not to say people don’t do that, just not the
ones I know. The ones that are looking to save $ either use forums, listserv
or bit torrent. So M$ is really biting its own tail, as people that want to
circumvent there policies will, and people using TechNet properly are burned
and at the very least disenfranchised…

I disagree, most people I know that have TechNet used it for business, if
you want software free/cheap you can find it without TechNet all day...

I do not agree that Microsoft sees IT Pro as competitors. I think the job
of the IT Pro is changing. People need to be more open mined about change.
Most individual people I know that got a TechNet subscription where not
using it for the programs designed intent but has a cheep source for
software.

Cheers
Ryan

It is totally irrelevant if Apple or Google are gaining market share. What
is true is that Microsoft perceives the IT personnel as "competitors" to its
services. For Microsoft's standpoint, the world would be great if IT people
simply disappear. This would leave the door open for all kinds of direct
Microsoft services to corporations.

In that context, IT personnel can gain by expanding their universe beyond
the Microsoft mantra and bringing in the businesses they serve products and
solutions from a variety of vendors.

I am certainly glad that all my mobile devices (including my new iPad Air)
and my laptop (a Macbook Pro Retina) are all Apple products. It is no wonder
Apple is gaining market share again.... This sucks!
