Sharing is typically a case where decoding would have to occur. The more I think about it, the more I believe it all boils down to have some kind of lazy decoding strategy where if everything goes ok from source to output (including output's encoding format matching encoded data's format) then nothing is decoded.. No need for changing types and the like but just work at operators and source level..
