#196: say_metadata is broken

Although append() works on simple examples, say_metadata is broken on
current SVN. It creates a queue with one request queued, but that request
is never resolved if you inspect it (by removing interactive=false).
I suspect that it is a general problem of activation / waking up, since
say_metadata() still doesn't work by replacing the request.queue by a
simple single(). And the queue trick at toplevel works well.
