 I think that it is a good idea, and also a good exercise.

 Concerning noise, another useful parameter is the octave: instead of
 changing the sample every time for a random value, only change it every N
 samples (octave=N, default to 1). This gives a white noise with a lower
 overall frequency, and you can create brown noise by adding white noise at
 many different octaves. Modulate that by multiplying with a sine, and you
 get the sound of the ocean :p I had played with that some day where I
 discovered about all these colors of noise on wikipedia, but I think I
 lost the patch.
