This line (of ocaml-shout/src/Makefile) is:
-include $(OCAMLMAKEFILE)
Same for ocaml-ao, ocaml-duppy, ocaml-mad, etc.
For liquidsoap, the errors are also on some ifdefs in Makefile.rules.

This is a compatibility problem with BSD make. The thing is that when
you run gmake, it recursively calls BSD make in the subdirectories. In
the main Makefile, we use $(MAKE) which should cause make to call
itself. That might go wrong because you have the environment variable
MAKE defined? Does that work better if you run "MAKE=gmake gmake"?

In the meantime, you can try to manually run the build loop:
  for i in `cat PACKAGES | grep -v '^\#'` ; do gmake -C $i ; done
But it's likely that the same recursion problem will occur somewhere else.

Cheers,
