A long time ago there was a "strict" parameter in switch(), to control
this aspect. I was talking about it earlier in this thread, forgetting
that I removed it two years ago:

Let's say that it's the normal (and now only) behavior of switch(). I
have a vague souvenir of a way to emulate the old non-"strict" switch
mode. It wasn't at(), which I think didn't exist at that time. But
this might be a good answer now.

If you're happy with it, I'm happy with it. I suspect we won't need
this old "strict" parameter again anyway.
